Over de inzending
When I gazed upon ‘Cavallo e cavaliere’ for the first time, I felt bisected, split in two. First, I saw inner fire and imbalance. Then, I saw sheer joy. The necessity of presence is at the core of this sculpture, as seen in the expressive and wild postures of the horse and rider. If only there was a little more connection, a little more presence, would the ride be smoother? Or is it precisely the lack of control over the horse, a symbol of power, dominance, and domestication, which breathes reality into this interaction? This piece of art is situated at the border of the conflicts and thrills that define humanity, which is why I decided to write about inner conflict, impermanence, and elation in my song, entitled “24.”
My musical background is deeply folk, so when I began learning the guitar as a young girl in the Snake River Plain of Idaho, finger picking was the first priority. It’s not accidental that finger picking sonically implies a type of “moving forward,” a rhythmic trudging, a trot. It is believed that the horse is humanity’s most important ally from the animal kingdom, domesticated around 3000 BC, allowing civilization to develop and move. These creatures are a basin of possibility that we dipped into, so whilst writing this song, I began to imagine myself as the flailing rider. Writing “I’ve been an island long before I was born,” in the first verse allows me to connect with an uncontrolled, isolated humanity. Our tendency to think we are alone when we are not; we cannot find balance within ourselves, we seek to control outside of the self, we seek to continually search and develop and push, and therefore cannot embrace the other living bodies around us. We will have constant inner fire, visually implied by the red and the burnt yellow escaping from the cracks of the horse and rider, and we will surely not have a smooth ride.
Finally, I was named “Wynnm” because of the “Houyhnhnm” characters in Jonathan Swift’s novel “Gulliver’s Travels.” The “Houyhnhnms” are a fictional race of telepathic, gentle, and emotionally intelligent horses. They represent balance and peace, so I think this search for inner balance has always occurred within me and within my music. The chorus “It’s getting real hard to know myself / in the night I’m trouble / in the day I’m gone,” is meant to embody the search, to recognize one’s downfalls in order to find presence.

Een ruiter zit op zijn paard en steekt zijn armen in paniek in de lucht. Het paard gooit zijn hoofd in de nek en lijkt de man af te willen werpen. De ruiter lijkt overgeleverd aan de wil van het paard, niet bij machte om iets aan de nijpende situatie te veranderen.
Het verhaal achter het werk
Ruiterbeelden zijn het centrale thema in het werk van Marini. Het thema van paard en ruiter staat voor hem symbool voor het menselijk bestaan. In dit beeld wil Marini de afhankelijkheid en kwetsbaarheid van de mens laten zien. Hij zet de expressie van dit werk extra kracht bij door het houten beeld te beschilderen. Vooral de rode kleur springt eruit.
Waarom uitgekozen voor Art Rocks
Dit kunstwerk toont een spannend en kwetsbaar tafereel. Alsof de tijd stil is gezet en de onvermijdelijke val van de ruiter ieder moment kan plaatsvinden. Of is er sprake van een misverstand en is dit eigenlijk een heel vrolijk beeld waarbij de ruiter zijn armen van plezier in de lucht gooit? We hopen dat dit kunstwerk de deelnemers van Art Rocks uitdaagt om hun eigen interpretatie vorm te geven in een spannende / kwetsbare of juist uitbundige muzikale compositie.
Over de kunstenaar
Marino Marini sluit met zijn ruiterbeelden aan bij de Italiaanse kunstgeschiedenis, waarin ruiterstandbeelden van heersers een belangrijke rol spelen. Tegelijkertijd zet hij zich ook af tegen de fascistische kunst met haar sterke nadruk op macht en heerschappij. Hij maakt verschillende versies van de ruiterbeelden met elk hun eigen thematiek. Zo maakt hij beelden waarbij de ruiter ontspannen rechtop zit, waarmee hij eenheid wil uitdrukken. Daarnaast maakt hij ook beelden van steigerende paarden zonder ruiter en beelden als deze waarbij de ruiter de controle lijkt te verliezen. Deze staan voor hem symbool voor machteloosheid en verstoord evenwicht.
